Ma’o - our native cotton Gossypium tomentosum is endemic to the #hawaiianislands. The short, brown, cotton fibers aren’t ideal for textile production but has been integral in disease resistance breeding programs with commercial cotton. This hardy, sprawling shrub is in the #hibiscus family, with luminous yellow flowers and silvery leaves. It’s hawaiian name, ma’o, come from the green dye that can be made from these flowers. #nativehawaiianplantmonth #gossypium #cotton #botanicalgarden #botany #horticulture #nature #honoluluparks #hawaii #oahu #plants #flowers #trees #seeds #shrubs #OurGardensYourHome #kokocraterbotanicalgarden #wahiawabotanicalgarden #hoomaluhiabotanicalgarden #liliuokalanibotanicalgarden #fosterbotanicalgarden

‘Ulei- ( Osteomeles anthyllidifolia ) is one of only three native hawaiian plants in the #rose family. This sprawlimg shrub is commonly found in dry, rocky substrates from sea level to 8,000 ft and can prevent soil erosion. Traditionally, many parts of this plant were utilized: from making a lavender dye from the small fruit, using the beautifully compound leaves for lei, and even the pliable stems for fishing nets. #ulei #ostemeles #lavender #somanygoodones #nativehawaiianplantmonth #plantnatives #kokocraterbotanicalgarden #wahiawabotanicalgarden #hoomaluhiabotanicalgarden #fosterbotanicalgarden #liliuokalanibotanicalgarden #botanicalgarden #botany #horticulture #nature #honoluluparks #hawaii #oahu #plants #flowers #trees #seeds #shrubs #OurGardensYourHome
