It was a busy month for the field crew in April. On foot, we covered just over 4,000 acres looking for 9 different species. That took us through 16 different watersheds over 1100+ hours! These are some of our favorite moments from the month. . . #fieldcrewinaction #malamaaina #lovetheoutdoors #protectourforests #plantnerds #hawaiiconservation #hardwork #oahuisc #cooljobs #oahu #hawaii #plantpeople #oahuhikes #peoplewholoveplants #hikersofinstagram #conservation

Devil weed has some doppelgangers and we have a guide to help you identify them. These look-a-likes can be tough to decipher at first glance but using these comparison cards makes it much easier. Are you interested in joining our devil weed crew and helping us search the island for this invasive species? Happy Aloha Friday everyone! We were lucky enough to catch this special treat on our way back to refuel from aerial surveys. This whale must be one of the last of the humpbacks for this season, ready to make it’s six-week journey back to Alaskan waters. . . #alohafriday #sighttosee #aerialsurveys #invasivespeciesmanagement #maukatomakai #kohal #oahuisc #workkinetings #oahu #hawaii #hawaiiwildlife #conservationhawaii #malamaaina #marinemammals #humpbackwhales #whales

In natural resources management sometimes we have to get creative in order to eradicate an invasive species. Here is a fun video from scishow highlighting some of the weird ways invasive species have been fought in the past. Remember you can help fight invasive species by recreating responsibly, staying on designated trails, always cleaning your boots and gear between hikes. . . #plantpeople #oahuhikes #plantnerds #oopsiwetmyplants #funny #peoplewholoveplants #hikersofinstagr...am #oahuisc #conservation . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4ziow1H7ck See more

Devil weed can quickly spread in pastures and farmlands. This plant is toxic to livestock when ingested. Being proactive can save time and money when it comes to managing this pest. Keeping a lookout for the weed and removing it ASAP goes a long way in keeping ag lands free from this pest. How do healthy watersheds help provide the water supply we need? With a healthy forest of course :) A healthy forest has multiple layers; ground cover, understory and canopy. These layers work together like a giant sponge, allowing water to drip slowly underground and into our streams. Forest full of invasive plants are often missing these layers and rainwater runs off the surface causing erosion and stormwater run-off and contributes to flooding events . .
