For my rustic live edge frames, I include bow tie mortisses or "pewa" (PEH-vah) in Hawaii, where traditionally they were used to make repairs in canoes or food calabashes. The following series of pictures documents my process: I locate each one and use CA glue to hold them in position temporarily as I trace with pencil and a marking knife. I then free-hand the waste out with a router and mortissing bit. The mortisse is carefully cut using chisels down to the lines laid out wi...th the marking knife. Satisfied with the fit, the bottom of the pewa is chamfered for ease and wood glue is applied. It's then driven snug with a mallet and wooden block, and trimmed flush with the ripping side of a Japanese ryoba saw. A quick sanding with a small belt sander and it's ready for finish sanding. This was a fun project in teak wood for an outdoor bath in Waimea done in the traditional japanese style. The simple and understated design on the surface belies the involved technical execution of the assembly. For the shower grate, the three panels are constructed with integegral stainless steel threaded rod, and the furo stool uses blind dovetail joinery in twelve hidden mortisse and tenon joints. I made another new tool this past weekend which I'm naming the "SP-SP". I've likely made in the neighborhood of five hundred frames, and the operation of measuring the inside lengths is a tricky one. So, I thought of a tool to make it less tricky. Fair use if anyone would like to make one for themselves.
