Old Lahaina Luau 12.12.2021

May Day is Lei Day In Hawaii May 1st is Lei Day, and was the brainchild of Don Blanding. In 1927, he came up with the idea of a uniquely Hawaiian holiday that everyone could celebrate. His editors at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin presented it to the public and the idea was enthusiastically embraced. Lei Day became an official holiday in 1929. During those first years, the event included the selection of a Lei Day queen and court. Lei Day celebrations continue today and have bec...ome a state-wide celebration in all of Hawai’i, marking the first day of May with lei-making competitions, concerts, and the giving and receiving of lei among friends and family. A Lei is a garland or wreath. More loosely defined, a lei is any series of objects strung together with the intent to be worn. The most popular concept of a lei in Hawaiian culture is a wreath of flowers presented upon arriving or leaving and symbolizes affection. This concept was popularized through tourism between the Hawaiian Islands and the continental United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The celebration begins in the morning of May first every year and continues throughout the entire day and even continues onto the next day. Each Hawaiian island has a different type of lei that is used for the celebration and for its people to wear. The festivities have consistently grown each year and the state of Hawai'i has had to move the location of the event which was first held in the Courts and Town Halls, but has since been moved to Kapi'olani park (O’ahu) where it is still being held today. Each Hawaiian island also designates an official flower or lei material - Hawai'i: red pua lehua ('ohi'a blossom), Maui: lokelani (pink Damask rose), O'ahu: pua 'ilima, Kaua'i: mokihana berry, Moloka'i - Pua Kukui (blossom of candlenut tree), Lana'i: kauna'oa (native dodder), Ni'ihau: pupu (tiny seashells), and Kaho'olawe: hinahina (native beach heliotrope).
