Invite to Photo Tour of Southeast Asia - Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam (via ZOOM) Sunday, April 18, 2021 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. by Betsy Kairen Morrigan... Please take a trip with me and experience the Buddhist temples, amazing ancient sites and modern cities, and the people, places, and food of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In January and February 2020, I traveled to S.E. Asia for the first time. Thailand is an emerging bustling economy, very tourist oriented, with all signs in Thai and English, both Buddhist and Muslim. Angkor Wat, a major Buddhist temple complex located in Cambodia, is the largest religious temple in the world in a desperately poor country. Vietnam continually surprised me in its religious and geographic variety as I travelled 1500 miles north from Ho Chi Minh City (old Saigon) to Hanoi by bus and sleeper train. I went to Vietnam partly to do penance for the atrocities our country committed there during the twenty year Vietnam War. I’d like to invite you to join me on this trip through a Zoom presentation lasting about an hour on April 18 at 10:00 AM. Reverend Jiko will send you a Zoom link and all you have to do is click on it to enter. There will be plenty of time for your questions and responses. If you would like to receive the Zoom link, please give Rev. Jiko your name and email address ([email protected]).

An invitation from Rev. Duncan Ryuken Williams, Funie Hsu, Chenxing Han: A National Buddhist Memorial Ceremony for Asian American Ancestors On May 4th, 2021, exactly seven weeks, or forty-nine days, will have passed since the Atlanta shootings. In many Buddhist traditions, forty-nine days after death marks an important transition for the bereaved. As we pray for the liberation of those who have come before us, these ancestors will likewise alleviate our community’s pain, for ...we are interlinked with each other, across generations, in our collective liberation. The hourlong memorial will take place on Tuesday, May 4th, 2021 at 4pm PDT (7pm EDT). Our host for the livestreamed ceremony is the Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles. The temple, restored after a groundswell of community support, will serve as the sacred space from which we can enact collective transformation. We will chant sutras, recite the names of our ancestors, heal in ceremony, and share Dharma perspectives from leading Asian American Buddhists to repair an important aspect of our nation’s racial karma. https://www.maywegather.org

Our new plaque showing that Daifukuji is listed on the National Register of Historic Places was fastened to the exterior wall of the temple today. Our history goes back to 1914 when the first minister, Rev. Kaiseki Kodama, arrived from Japan to establish Daifukuji. The current building, which is not the original structure, was dedicated in 1921, one hundred years ago.

May We Gather is the first national Buddhist memorial service in response to anti-Asian violence. The ceremony will be live-streamed from Higashi Honganji Temple in Los Angeles, which was vandalized earlier this year. The event will be freely broadcast online and will bring together Asian American Buddhists and their allies to heal in community together. Please join us in supporting May We Gather.
