Kayo's Japanese Classes / Pono Maui 23.12.2021

Happy New Year! May this be a happy and fruitful year.

Kayo's Japanese Classes / Pono Maui 21.12.2021

The other day, my Japanese students enjoyed making "Hina ningyo". It is a special doll wearing a traditional Japanese costume for Doll's festival. In Japan, March 3 is Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival or Girls' Festival), Hinamatsuri is a festival when we display Hina dolls and pray for young girls' growth and happiness. The custom began during the Heian period and the dolls were dressed in gorgeous ancient court attire.... Families with young daughters mark this day by setting up a display of dolls inside the house. They offer rice crackers and other food to the dolls. All the students took a long time to make the dolls. So I forgot to take a group photo along with their works.

The other day, my Japanese students enjoyed making "Koinobori" and "Kabuto". Japanese Children’s Day is a national holiday that is celebrated annually across Japan on May 5th. The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate and wish for the happiness and well-being of all children. Japanese families display warrior helmets (Samurai helmets) called kabuto in Japanese, as well as samurai dolls, are known as gogatsu ningyo or May dolls.... The doll symbolizes strength and courage, especially for boys, during the time when Japanese Children's Day was still known as Boys' Day. During the days leading up to May 5th, or Children’s Day, families with boys in their family would raise colorful banners shaped in the form of carp. One carp would represent each boy in the family, beginning with the eldest at the top of the banner. In the wind, these carp would appear to be swimming in the sky, symbolizing the boys’ strength.

The other day, my Japanese students, aged 6 and 7, enjoyed playing "Fukuwarai". Fukuwarai, (a game similar to pin the tail on the donkey) is a traditional game played on New Year's Day in Japan. The result was very interesting. A is the boy. B is the girl. The girl's sensitivity was much higher than the boy's. It is said that a female is a right-brained person and a male is a left-brained person. Even at their ages, that has started. ... 67AB
