Want to explore and experience beautiful, living coral reef and all the other marine life the reef supports? The patch reefs in Kane’ohe Bay are spectacular and unlike anywhere else on Oahu! There are some easy things you can do to make sure your adventure doesn’t hurt this fragile ecosystem. Help to preserve the reef by: 1. Only using reef safe sun protection. Most synthetic chemicals in many popular sunscreens are toxic to coral. Many of these have already been banned... in Hawaii. Look at the active ingredients of your sunscreen. You want ‘NON NANO’ natural mineral compounds such as zinc oxide only. SPF clothing is even better. 2. Never touching or taking anything. Assume everything you see is alive. Coral may look like rock, but it’s actually a community of living animals that support all other life on the reef. You wouldn’t step on a sea turtle, right? Never touch the coral at all. Years of growth can be destroyed with one footstep. And taking coral, rock, or anything as a souvenir, even if you think it’s not alive, is absolutely prohibited. Look but never touch anything other than sand. The healthiest coral reef on Oahu lives in Kane’ohe Bay. And this coral is the foundation of all the marine life on the reef. Without the coral, the reef couldn’t support all the fish, turtles, and other marine life that it does. But the coral itself is actually a community of living animals that are very fragile and very easily damaged and destroyed. Coral is very sensitive to temperature change, chemical and other pollutants in the water, and especially easily damaged b...y contact with boats and people. So please, when you go out on the water, and especially when you want to observe these amazing coral reef ecosystems, make sure to only wear reef safe sun protection, and make sure never to touch, stand, sit, walk on, or take any coral, even if you think it doesn’t look alive.
