L ‘UMI KMH 2-14-2020 KU’U IPO ALOHA Eternally inspired by these beautiful creatures who epitomize true love and commitment! We were introduced to the amazi...ng world of the ml or Laysan Albatrosses in 2018 for a special ceremony during Makahiki. And we’ve learned so much about and from them! They return to Kaua’i in early November to find their mate and settle in almost the same exact location! A coming home celebration and reunion of love to breed and nest with hopes that their one egg laid will produce a healthy baby ml chick for the season! Mahalo to @hobatross for connecting us with these invredible po’e manu who have shown us what true love Is all about! It’s been more than a decade since I’ve taken out my box of blades. Last one I made was in 2008. I initially used them to cut silkscreen designs on lacquer fi...lm for textile printing. And then later learned the art of Ipu Pawehe, which I fell in love with immediately. Looks like I got the bug to create contemporary and traditional designs again. #ipuinspired #kaipuwai #ipuwehe #kaipuhaa #lavenahawaii #inspiredbyhula #studioHAA See more

E HNAI ‘AI 2 years ago, we held our first ‘ina to Table celebration and fundraiser in Kelia, Kaua’i. It was presented in collaboration with the gracious support of Adam & Bonnie Asquith of the former Kelia Farms. From kalo to pua’a, everything on the menu was sourced from the ahupua’a of Kelia. E HNAI ‘AI: The name of our event comes from a line of an ancient chant that is offered by the kumu hula in response to haumna (students ) who have formally petitioned for e...ntry into the hlau. It enables them to seek permission to not only enter into the hlau itself, but into Laka’s realm of expertise and knowledge that is upheld by their kumu. The exchange of mele komo and mele khea is one of the ritual protocols that continues to be taught and practiced in Hlau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai today. The complete line, E hnai ‘ai a hewa i ka waha is chanted by the kumu in response to the haumna’s humble asking of permission for entry to learn. It is the kumu’s pledge to feed them until they can take no more. The gracious act of hnai is for the kumu to nourish and satiate the student’s appetite for knowledge, wisdom and skills that is grounded and guided by the traditions of hula. This Thursday on June 11, we’ll present E Hnai ‘Ai as a socially responsible drive- thru L’au-to-Go! Just preorder your selection of Hawaiian delicacies on our website at www.studioHAA.com! Can’t make it to Kapa’a or perhaps you’re off-island, on the continent or far away? Let us feed and nourish you with live Hawaiian music and a cultural webinar commemorating King Kamehameha and the unification of the Hawaiian Island Kingdom! A chant workshop is part of the evening’s festivities too! Preorders in advance online only. www.studioHAA.com Please, will you join us?

All public events celebrating the King Kamehameha holiday was cancelled weeks ago due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Not just here on Kaua’i, but across the isla...nd chain. In our quest to consciously address the possible reopening of Studio HA’A, it was clear that we wanted to honor Hawai’i’s paramount ali’i, Kamehameha Paiea. That was a very important priority for us. 2 years ago we hosted our first ‘ina to Table experience in collaboration with Bonnie and Adam Asquith of the former Kelia Farms. We called it E Hnai ‘Ai. E Hnai ‘Ai comes from a line in a protocol chant that is an integral part of our traditional practices. It is a reminder of the reciprocal relationship and bond that is shared between the kumu hula and haumna. It is also representative of the myriad sources of sustenance that have nourished us for countless generations! Under the circumstances, we explored possible ways to tweak our goals and concepts and make it work. Please join us for this socially responsible drive-thru l’au-to-go! This unique ‘ina to Table experience has been made possible by local farmers and cultural practitioners on Kaua’i. TOMORROW, Thursday, June 11 Drive-thru pick up from 12noon to 3:30pm at Studio HA’A in Kapa’a. 5pm Virtual Festivities begin with live Hawaiian music featuring Kekai Chock, followed by a cultural webinar and papa oli with Kumu Hula, Khaulani Kekua. We’re celebrating and honoring King Kamehameha on this holiday! Please join us! Pre-orders only! www.studioHAA.com
