PV Solar still considered a good investment in Hawaii. If you recently signed up or are thinking about signing up for solar this is a MUST read. Tune in next week to learn what your contractor must do to actually calculate your savings, it requires more than an electric bill...... The two programs replacing the NEM program are: 1. Grid-Supply Program: Limited to 25MW or about 4500 Households. This program allows rooftop PV customers to export electricity to the grid in return for 15 cents per kilowatt-hour on Oahu and 17 cents per kilowatt-hour on Maui. New PV Customers pay a minimum bill of $25. 2. Self-Supply Program: Open to all areas (even areas once considered full). This program allows rooftop PV customers to offset their daytime demand (30-50% of their electric bill). When batteries become more affordable this option will allow homeowners to offset 100% of their electric bill. New PV Customers pay a minimum bill of $25. True Facts hidden by other Sales Companies: The utility (HECO, MECO, HELCO) does not allow you to sell more electricity than you purchase. In other words you should not be oversizing your system, if you do you will be throwing away electricity. The Public Utility Commission (PUC) has granted the option for Grid-Supply for the next 2 years. After 2 year the program will be renegotiated (this allows 2 years for battery prices to drop and become feasible). MUST READ FOR NEW SOLAR BUYERS IN HAWAII. In order to properly estimate your savings your contractor has to measure your daytime usage for at least a week to know your daytime vs. nighttime loads. This is done by installing a CT Scanner on your home and analyzing this data after. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR A CONTRACTOR TO TELL YOU YOUR PAYBACK PERIOD WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION. With the new solar program you cannot sell more electricity than you purchase. Oversizing a PV System is not advantageous. Make sure your contractor is accurately sizing your system (this is specific to each family's usage). How to do this? Ask us.
