AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE... We love our beautiful, historic neighborhood in downtown Hilo, but unfortunately the location does make us susceptible to occasional problems. In just the past two weeks, the cover protecting our kiln was stolen and, even worse, people broke into our Annex and stole materials and art supplies that we were planning to use in upcoming activities for keiki. And from time to time, EHCC staff and friends have needed to intervene with intruders to ensure tha...t our grounds remain safe and pleasant for all our patrons, particularly children. Especially in light of the recent thefts, we know it is imperative to improve our security. As people learn about the recent incidents, they’ve been asking Is there anything we can do to help? The answer is YES. We are drawing up plans to fence in our grounds, using materials (commercial-grade chain links fortified with slats) that will be both attractive to look at and hard to break into. Such fencing will not only discourage theft and make our grounds safer, it will also open up new possibilities for courtyard activities, such as outdoor theatre and performances. (The fencing will also be a wonderful complement to the new asphalt paid for by a generous donor check it out if you haven’t seen it, the improvement is terrific.) We’ve just initiated discussion with a fencing contractor so we don’t have a final price, but we anticipate the cost will be in the range of $10,000 and we’re exploring how we can raise the needed funds. If you would like to help, please make a donation to EHCC and indicate that you want your money to go to the EHCC courtyard fund. Every contribution, large or small, will move us closer to making our facilities better for all of us. Visit the link in our bio or https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/1610496 to make a donation today. KKULU: The Pillars of Mauna a Wkea presents H OO K U P U: Unifying the world one offering at a time. Gifting is an act of aloha that binds; an exchange of the heart, a demonstration of solidarity, growing alliances, and a sprouting of new and long-lasting relationships. In honor of the life force of Mauna A Wkea and Thousands of HOOKUPU offered in ceremony on the Ala Hulu Kpuna, we lovingly present a small collection of offerings from Hawaii, the Tribes of Native Ame...rica & Canada, Moananuikea, Asia, and Europe. The magic is that we became unified for the sake of a mountain one HOOKUPU at a time. Thresholds: A solo exhibition by Bob Danhieux Douglas (@danhieux). The makai gallery features monoprints based on traditional Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock) style printing. The images all deal with different forms of isolation, and present Douglas’s interpretation of his experiences camping out at the Mauna Kea access road during the TMT protests, and his subsequent isolation during pandemic lockdown. Exhibition on-view: April 3rd through May 28th, 2021. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10am-4pm & Saturdays 10am-2pm. EHCC leads a collective art installation in Kalkaua Park, in conjunction with similar installations to be held throughout Hawai‘i Island led by County Council Member Ashley Kierkiewicz (@ashley4puna). The park project is an extension of EHCCs Young At Art gallery exhibition (March), echoing the same theme, CommUnity: Finding Togetherness in Distance. Throughout the month of March EHCC facilitated activities designed not only to unite the community but also to highlight its... ongoing youth program, the Youth Arts Series, and encourage people to visit the EHCC gallery and gain some inspiration from the Young At Art keiki artists. To encourage the importance of youth arts education and the importance of nurturing creativity, Mayor Mitch Roth proclaimed March, Youth Art Month in the County of Hawai‘i. In addition, the Hawai‘i County Council adopted Resolution 58-21 on March 17. The resolution urges the designation of March as Youth Art Month in the County of Hawai‘i and supports activation of Art In The Park island wide to showcase youth artwork. Throughout the month keiki and teens were encouraged to express their creativity and design 1x1 flags. EHCC held a variety of decorating events ranging from socially distanced in-person workshops, to free events on it's lanai, and online content for designing at home. The flags were installed in Kalkaua Park on April 1 with the help of Maurice Messina and his team at the Department of Parks and Recreation. The installation features 435 individual flags and will be on view until the end of April. Huge MAHALO to Maurice Messina and the Department of Parks and Recreation for installing the flags, to the keiki for their participation, and for the ongoing support in making art and expression available to our community! #youngatart #youngartists #theyouthartsseries #keiki #art #activation #kids #supportthearts #creativity #community #findingtogethernessindistance #expression #exhibition #installation #parkproject #artinthepark #fun #education #celebration #makeart #hilo #hawaii #bigisland #easthawaii #kalakauapark #nationalyouthartmonth #april @kellie_miyazu @menemi3
