This is a TEST email of the UHM integrated campus-wide UH ALERT emergency communications system. In an actual emergency, you would be given instructions, updates and, ultimately, the final all-clear notification via emails and... text messages (if you have signed up to receive emergency text alerts). Keep your emergency contact information up-to-date at https://www.hawaii.edu/alert/. The official UH Manoa home page at https://manoa.hawaii.edu and social media accounts will be updated to reflect the test (follow us on Facebook and Twitter @uhmanoa). UH Manoa Department of Public Safety social media accounts will also be updated to reflect this test (follow us on Facebook and Twitter @uhmanoasafety). This TEST is conducted once each semester (this is the fall 2021 test). If you are having technical trouble with UH ALERT, see the article at http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1363 or send an email to [email protected]. In addition to signing up for UH Alert, we encourage our community to read through our Emergency Response Guidebook, which provides emergency response and evacuation procedures for a wide variety of incidents, including hurricanes, natural disasters, fires, active shooter incidents, bomb threats, civil disturbances, and more. String of Storage Closet Burglaries at UH Mnoa A string of burglaries has occurred from three separate storage closets on UH Mnoa campus recently. In one incident, a custodian’s closet at HELP was burglarized and a leaf blower was taken. In a separate incident, a suspect was seen on CCTV camera entering a maintenance room at HIG and attempting to take equipment, when he was interrupted by DPS officers. In the third incident, several items of maintenance equipment were ta...ken from a storage closet at Shidler. Please notify the UH Mnoa Department of Public Safety (DPS) at (808) 956-6911 or the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) at 911 if you have any information regarding these incidents. DPS recommends: - Always ensure that your storage shed or room is locked, even if you only plan to be away for a few minutes. Never leave an unlocked storage area unattended. - Install a locking bar to span the front of your storage shed, ensuring that it spans all doors on the shed. There are many locking bar options which are easy to install and can be found online. - If your shed or storage area has windows with a screen or jealousies, consider installing a secure window that cannot easily be cut or removed. - Use a high-quality lock that cannot easily be compromised by bolt cutters. - Consider installing security cameras or alarms on any storage areas, especially if they are not visited or seen every day. - Regularly check on storage areas sometimes DPS receives reports of burglaries from sheds that have not been checked for several days or weeks, making the time of the burglary difficult to determine. - If multiple people have access to a storage room or unit, ensure that everyone follows the same protocols for keeping the area secure. - Keep an inventory of items in the storage unit and be sure to update the list each time something is removed or replaced. - Keep serial numbers of any higher-priced items or equipment, to ensure that property can be returned to you if recovered. Avoid storing expensive items in an outdoor storage shed. If possible, store these items indoors in a secured room. - Contact us if you observe suspicious people, vehicles, or activity on campus. While the term suspicious may mean different things to different people, we urge our community to contact us even if they aren’t sure whether or not something seems out of place. If you see something, say something by immediately calling DPS at (808) 956-6911 or HPD at 911 so an officer can respond to check the location.
