There is a strong relationship of BMI with percent liver fat even in children with low liver fat levels without detecting an association with age, sex, and dietary or physical activity patterns. After adjusting for total body fat, no differences in VAT by ethnicity were observed. The 3DO-5C (3D Optical Imaging-5 Compartment) model provides a feasible and accessible method for body composition assessment, including fat mass independent of hydration status. Multiple within-day measurements allow for better mean measures for monitoring intraday hydration changes in athletes. Further research is warranted to improve the precision of this model for monitoring change accurately. In this investigation between labs, sample types, and technologies, estimates of total body water were highly correlated, but differences were statistically significant. Thus, choosing a criterion is suggested as best practice until further agreement on criterion and a means to test facilities is established. We picked saliva due to repeatability and historical reasons. 3DO can predict body composition accurately and detect significant change in body composition. This is the first time 3DO was used to evaluate change in both males and females, but accuracy of these predictions may be hindered by models built with cross-sectional data. We plan to build upon this and improve our models.
