We’re LIVE at Safeway in Pleasanton, CA sharing amazing gift ideas for Dad!
To celebrate Pride Month, we spoke to Mona Yoo, an Employee Relations Manager and an active member in the company’s local and national Pride Alliance group. Mona shares what this month means to her and how compassion and speaking up help ensure a future of equal rights for all. Trigger warning: depression, suicide. I come from a very traditional Korean family. When I came out at the age of 16, I was told it was not acceptable and considered unnatural. Also, while growing up ...in the 90s, there were tragedies around the LGBTQ+ community to include the passing of Matthew Shepard and Brandon Teena, which showed just how dangerous it could be for the LGBTQ+ community; this created fears that still linger today. Like many LGBTQ+ youths, I was faced with depression that led to attempting to take my own life; luckily, I did not succeed. Since then, I have come a long way and have come to learn that there is nothing wrong with me. I’ve learned to be proud of who I am and have committed to living my best authentic life. Here I am, almost 23-years later, where my wife and I are welcoming a baby girl into our family. Life is good! PRIDE month is a chance for our LGBTQ+ counterparts and allies to celebrate how far we’ve come at the sacrifice and the persistence of those before us who paved the way for the LGBTQ+ community. While our country has made great strides in LGBTQ+ rights, there is still much work to be done. My hope for the future is equal rights for all. If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, the Lifeline network is available 24/7 across the United States. Happy Father’s Day! Say thanks to the dads in your life for all they do
