As we prepare for a very unique 2021 Merrie Monarch Festival that will happen without a live audience and where the focus will be on the safety of all participa...nts, it was decided that there will be no live auana music at this year’s competition. As a result, some of Hawaii’s finest musicians, kumu hula, and our production crew got together last weekend at Waiwai Collective in a COVID-safe environment to pre-record the music for this year’s festival. While this is definitely first for the Merrie Monarch Festival, one thing remains true the kuleana to ensure our culture and moolelo is perpetuated continues to be a focal point. With COVID-19 restrictions on live music performances over the last year, it was wonderful to see so many of our musicians come through and perform together. We can’t wait for everyone to hear these mele and watch the amazing hula they will inspire.
