Some 33,000 Japanese Americans served in the U.S. Army during World War II, including as translators, interpreters and interrogators in the Pacific theater; in the 1399th Engineering Construction Battalion, and more than 100 women who joined the Women’s Army Corp. The commemorative stamp honors a regiment of second-generation Japanese Americans, also known as nisei, for becoming one of the most distinguished American fighting units of World War II. At the War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Asan, the names of more than two dozen dogs are on display to honor their service alongside U.S. military service members during the invasion of Guam to liberate the island from Japanese occupation.
