Pacific Historic Parks invites all to join us for History Talks on Saturday, February 27 at 9:00 AM, for The Saipan Interpreters with Fr. Eric Forbes, O.F.M. Cap. During the Japanese occupation of Guam during World War II, the Imperial Army, who could not speak Chamorro, employed 50 or so Chamorro interpreters from Saipan (and a few from Rota) who could speak both Chamorro and Japanese. The participation of these interpreters during the Japanese Occupation imparted a deep ...wound within many Guam Chamorros, a wound that was credited for the failure of Marianas reintegration in the 1960s. Was the popular indictment of Saipan interpreters justified? What can we learn on how it came about? What was the experience of Saipan interpreters themselves? And what does the historical record actually show about the interpreters’ activities on Guam during the war? Did you know Douglas MacArthur was the first (and only) American to serve as Field Marshal of the Philippine Army? Before World War II, he spent time in Manila... training Filipino forces. But once the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, MacArthur was unsuccessful in preventing further aggression in the Philippines. On this day in 1942, he bid farewell to President Manuel Quezon, who had been persuaded to move his government to the United States. At the same time, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, ordered MacArthur to head for Australia and assume command of American troops in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The kicker? There were no troops waiting for him. And MacArthur knew it. He officially left the Philippines on March 11. #rememberhonorunderstand #pacifichistoricparks #ishallreturn
