In order to get a masters in Chinese Medicine in Hawai’i, one must spend four years studying in depth the language of herbs. For each herb, we study the parts of each plant, the botanical, pharmaceutical, Chinese, and common names, the categorical actions, contraindications, the channels and organ systems each herb affects, the temperature, the dosage, the effect the herb takes on when combined with other herbs, the role the herb plays in formulas. We study formulas from clas...sic to modern, how formulas are constructed, how herbs are used in many different roles in the shaping of a formula, how to properly construct formulas that address the whole person, how to evolve prescriptions according to changing presentations and phases of a disease. We study the processing and preparation of herbs, from decocting to burning to cooking and dry-frying.
