I get more questions about watering gardens than anything else and to be sure, how and how often you water will affect your garden success more than anything else. So, let’s look at the basic facts. Plants need soil, nutrients and regular water to be healthy and bear fruit. Not enough water and the plant will be stressed and prone to insect attack and disease, but too much water or the wrong kind - will make the plant weak, and the roots rot and prone to fungus attack. I have been paying close attention to the types of questions I get on a fairly consistent basis, and overwhelmingly I get questions about why gardeners’ crops are failing for one reason or another. I hear these questions repeatedly: Why is my corn is turning brown? Why are all the fruit on my squash falling off? Why do my tomatoes have black patches on the bottom? or How do I kill this insect.... https://mauimistgardens.wordpress.com//20/why-veggies-fail/

Maui Onions! The words conjure up images of exotic tropical vegetables, savory culinary creations, and watering eyes. Coveted the world over, Maui Onions are special but they are actually not a special cultivar, their special combination of sweet-nutty and pungent flavor comes from the soil and the environment, not so much from the variety. Maui Onions are Texas Grano (or Granex) onions that are grown in Maui (or Hawaii). [ 1,186 more word ] https://mauimistgardens.wordpress.com///23/growing-onions/

Ahh the changing of the seasons, huh? Right now I am so fondly watching the leaves fall off the Plumeria trees and the birds migrate from the Mango trees on one side of the property to the Fig trees on the other, as the 89 degree Dog Days of Summer wane and I start to long for the fall’s crisp 87 degree breezes This is the time that we like to think about our Winter Gardens and transitioning from Summer to Winter crops. Interrupting my regularly scheduled BLOG Posts to bring you news about a new pest to Avocado Trees here in Hawaii. The Avocado Lace Bug or Pseudacysta Perseae is a newly introduced pest that is attracted to and attacks the leaves of the Avocado Tree. It has been identified on Oahu and the Big Island and also on Maui, though authorities believe the infected trees on Maui were destroyed.
