Guest Speaker: Adam Wong

Teya started her conservation career studying landbirds, seabirds, and marine mammals, mostly on remote islands. She has graduate degrees in management and law and worked as an assistant attorney general in Oregon before moving to Maui. Teya was the manager of the Maui Invasive Species Committee for 14 years and now coordinates the Birds, Not Mosquitoes project that is working to save our imperiled honeycreepers from extinction. Teya also writes about the environment and culture for local magazines, is a reporter at UN conferences on the environment, and mediates agricultural disputes in Hawaii.

He was raised in a Paniolo lifestyle learning the importance of caring for all of our resources. A proud honors graduate from the Hawaii public school system, he ...then went away to Oregon State University in Corvallis to study his passion in natural resource management. Adam finished his NREM degree infusing Hawaiian Studies and Ahupuaa management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. Adam has been a very active member in the Maui community. He was formerly the Director of Campus Outreach for Kamehameha Schools Maui, and is now employed with the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Aquatic Resources Division. He is a part-time rancher, fisherman, and in his free time he enjoys teaching his children sustainability through the traditions of mauka to makai living. Short summary of presentation: Adam will be speaking about Mauis coral reef ecosystems and the important relationships that happen within them. He will also share information on DARs mission, current projects and programs, and how we can help protect our marine resources for present and future generations. He will be highlighting research conducted at Molokini during the Maui County COVID-19 lockdown(s) which impacted commercial tour operations in the area.
