Hawaii’s native species are so pili to each other, their lives so intertwined, that you can’t really examine native flora without examining native fauna, too. ... Take kanawao for instance, the endemic Hawaiian hydrangea. While there are about 70-75 species of hydrangea in the world (native to Asia and the Americas), kanawao is the only one that is native to our pae ina. Kanawao grow on all the main islands except for Niihau and Kahoolawe across a wide elevation range, from under 1,000 feet to nearly 7,000 feet. As with practically all native species, kanawao are good friends with many other natives, including manu, nananana, m, and pp kuahiwibirds, spiders, bugs, and snails! Birds enjoy the fruit as well as the bugs and critters inside of them; happy face spiders hide out and lurk beneath the leaves; and happy little snails are often found snacking away at the mildew, algae, and such that coats the leaves. In the second pic check out the little that’s helping to keep this kanawao clean and healthy. #longlivethenatives #kanawao #broussaisia_arguta #endemic #nativehawaiianplant #nativehawaiianplantmonth #maytheforestbewithyou #alohaina #mlamaina #maui #hawaii #maunakahalawai #maunakahlwai #mkwp : crew member and aloha ina Michiko Smith feat. hand model Kainoa Marchello
