Happy Native Plant Month! One of the must-know native species for Hawaii is the Hawaiian tree fern, hapu'u. There are four species throughout Hawaii, Kauai has... three of them. The species pictured is Cibotium nealiae, an endemic species to Kauai. This species is identifiable by the gigantic fronds (up to 20 feet long) and the hairlessness of the base of the fronds. These slow-growing fern species can grow several inches in height annually for young individuals but drastically slows as the fern matures to only a centimeter of annual height growth. A once abundant species that was seen from sea level to the upper forest of Kauai (and Hawaii) but due to habitat degradation and pervious overharvesting, the current population is mainly in the Alakai.
