Burnout and Self-Care Workshop Offered for Lay Leaders (6) Lay leaders in our churches, associations, and Conference have been under excessive strain during the ongoing pandemic. We've all had to make and implement decisions while navigating conflicting information and competing priorities. Take a moment for yourselves! An interactive, live Zoom workshop, "Lay Leader Burnout and Self-Care," will be held on Saturday, February 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.... Register for this workshop, designed just for lay leaders and led by the same trainers who are offering boundary workshops for our Conference's clergy, Tracey Dawson and Wendy Kidd. This workshop is presented by the O'ahu Association and the Hawai'i Island Association of the Hawai'i Conference, UCC; and Sacred Space Ministry of the Rocky Mountain Conference.

This is why there are times when the most instructive question to bring to the text is not ‘what does it say?’, but ‘what am I looking for?’

E N EKALESIA HOOLE POPE O HAWAII NEI (Protestant Churches of Hawaii Today) Thirty years after the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions prou...dly declared Hawaii a Christian nation and characterized it as a civilized, native-led country on par with any other, the Sons of the Mission employed racial tropes to lead a new bastardized, political, and commercial "mission" and argue that the majority should not rule in Hawaii but rather the minority, civilized Anglo-Saxon community should. One of literally thousands of examples: In describing the reign of Her Majesty Queen Liliuokalani and why they led a coup to remove this rightful Sovereign, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser of 1 April 1893 declared, She controlled the Ministry [untrue], the Legislature [very untrue], and the country [exaggeration]. Her measures passed, her CREATURES (my emphasis) ruled, yet for some inscrutable reason, she was not satisfied... E n kahu o Hawaii Nei, Has your church, independently, in your community, [outside of institutional action] accepted this history and made real efforts to address the injustice? Meant as a sincere question coming from a non-theist ;)
