In May 2004, HPS sat down and talked with Uncle George Naope in a formal oral history interview. One of the things that came up in the conversation was the Hilo tsunami. Actually it usually came up in conversations with the elders from Hilo and Keaukaha, because it was such a memorable event in their young lives. April 1, 2021, is the 75th anniversary of the tsunami that devastated Hilo town and killed 179 people across the islands. Uncle George, always a visionary, note...d the tsunami when talking about composition and writing the stories of today. He said, Write that kind; write about when the tsunami came here.
