Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii soon? FACTS you may not know: The Big Island Is 4,028 mi. The affected area is less than 10 mi... Kilauea is a shield volcano versus Mt. Saint Helens which is a stratovolcano. The volcanic activity and where lava has flowed along the East Rift Zone in/near Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens Subdivisions is limited to an ISOLATED area in Lower Puna on the island of Hawai‘i ’s east side. Please see below on how to make donations to the residents of Puna. This area in the Puna district covers only less than a 20-square-mile area of the island’s 4,028 square miles. The district of Puna is approximately 500 square miles (the size of half of Rhode Island) (Kindly note, the map posted on 5/18/18 says 10 sq miles, it is now 20 sq miles) This is more than 100 driving miles away from the western Kohala and Kona Coasts, where the island’s major visitor accommodations and resorts are located, and the area furthest from the current activity. In addition, Hilo town is approximately 20 miles away, and accommodations and activities are unaffected by Klauea volcano. Klauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and has been erupting for the past 35 years. KOKUA FOR PUNA - Food, water, and supplies can be donated to the Hawaii Food Basket. https://www.hawaiifoodbasket.org/ For more information on the volcanic activity log on to: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatori//activity_2018.html For more information on the daily VOG report log on to: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/vmap/ Aloha from the Big Island Television ps...Sorry for the typos on the map. A Facebook image cannot be changed once posted (only deleted, which would delete this entire thread). See if you can find all four typos.
