Is it safe to live on the Big Island? This is a question I get a lot from people who are thinking about moving to the Big Island. It's important to understand the terrain and landscape of the Big Island when deciding where to live. Here is one map of the Lava Hazard Zones on the Big Island.... Lava Hazard Zones are based upon the likelihood of areas receiving a near-term flow of lava. Lava Zone 1 is the most hazardous, and Lava Zone 9 is the least hazardous. Most communities living near volcanoes on the Big Island are either in the low risk or safe zones. For example, the town of Hilo on the Big Island is close to the volcano and is considered in the safe zone. The risk to life and property is rare. There are many other maps of the Big Island such as average temperature, rainfall, volcano emissions and more to help you make an informed decision of buying on the Big Island.
